Fire Service Change for Jan 1, 2011
As of January 1, 2011, the Village of Oakwood will be providing Fire and Emergency Medical Service to the our Village. Mayor Cegelka and Village Council approved a contract with Oakwood at the council meeting on December 1, 2010.
The Village of Oakwood Fire and EMS is a full service operation, under the direction of Fire Chief Jim Schade. Fire Chief Schade has been a fire fighter with the Village for over 35 years and 8 years as Chief. The Fire Department has 5 supervisory officers and carries an average of 60 Fire Fighters/EMTs and Paramedics. The Village of Oakwood will be providing emergency Fire and EMS service through 911 calls. They will also respond to non-emergency calls and resident checks through non-emergency phone number at 440-232-1035. The City of Solon will continue to dispatch for our 911 calls as well as the Police non-emergency number. The Fire Department will have 7 employees on each shift when they begin offering services to us in January.
Many residents might remember that Glenwillow was previously served by the Village of Oakwood Fire Department through 2005. Since then, the city of Solon offered us a better contract. We are fortunate to have two high-caliber fire departments able to provide services to us. It is in the best interest of the Village to change providers at this time because Solon's last contact offer was higher than Oakwood’s and the Village was able to give us a long-term contract. I felt that a long contract period would guarantee constancy and security for this important service.
The Village of Oakwood is our neighbor to the west side of Glenwillow. It is a village of 3,600 residents lead by Mayor Gary Gottschalk. The Village is extremely capable of providing our residents and businesses this service.
The Village of Glenwillow would like to thank the City of Solon for their exemplary fire and EMS service over the past years and we look forward to working with them in the future on many other endeavours.
